Welcome to our website
Letter from the Chief:
I would like to welcome you to the website of the Corinth-Shiloh Fire Department. We are nestled between the cities of Seneca and Clemson, Oconee and Pickens Counties respectively, and Lakes Hartwell and Keowee. We serve a diverse piece of Oconee County. Although unincorporated, we have one of the highest population densities outside the areas covered by the municipal departments. We provide fire protection for the Newry mill community, Shiloh Rd, various subdivisions, the county regional airport, as well as the U.S. Highway 123 corridor between Clemson and Seneca.
In my short time in office, the department has made positive gains for the community. In the first few months, we called for an audit from ISO. We received an upgrade from a 7/9 to a 6/9. This score means that everyone within 5 miles of the fire station and 1000ft from a hydrant will receive a 6. Everyone 5 miles from the station but outside of the 1000ft will receive a 9. This may not seem like much, but from the audit we learned where we needed to make improvements in communications, equipment, station placement, hydrant placement, etc. The department is still working on key areas of improvement and will be calling on another audit in the next 3 years to be reevaluated. These improvements help lower taxes due to increased fire protection.
The second improvement is the addition of hydrants. Our community is extremely lucky that Seneca Light and Water has a water distribution grid already in place. By working closely with SL&W, hydrants have been added in key locations throughout the district. These hydrants may be considered an eye sore to some, but the positives are increased ability to deliver large amounts of water with little effort and a possibility of lower homeowners insurance for anyone living 1000ft from a hydrant. We will continue to install hydrants and look for other ways of delivering water until our ISO classification drops the /9.
The third major improvement to our service to the community was that we began to assist Oconee Medical Center on medical and rescue calls. Over half of the members are minimum Medical First Responders and meet the same stringent training requirements as all the county rescue squads. By adding this mission, the community has seen an increase in our presence, as well as a decrease in the amount of time to patient contact.
I could not be prouder of the group that I was elected to be in command of. Your neighbors, the members of this fine department, respond with professionalism and a level of training that most volunteer fire departments only dream of. We will continue to improve and progress in these tough economic times. We are still planning on a substation in the Shiloh community, replacing/consolidating vehicles to be leaner, and procuring an aerial ladder truck to increase our service to the community. We volunteer to assist the community we live in and do everything in a power to provide for a safe place to live.
The department is always accepting applications for membership. We provide opportunities for all interests: interior firefighting and exterior, medical/rescue, driver/operator, fire protection, and administrative. If interested please find the forms on this website.
Thank you for supporting the Corinth-Shiloh Fire Department.
