The Corinth-Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department serves a rural community in Oconee County located in the northwest corner of South Carolina. This is the most densely populated area, outside the cities, in the county. The Department's service area covers 30 square miles with a population of 11,125 residents. Our community has three large industries; an elementary school with 506 students; and a regional airport, which has no firefighting or rescue capability. Our fire district is dissected by Northfolk Southern Railroad's main line from New York to New Orleans. In addition, we are nestled between two major bodies of water; Lake Hartwell and Lake Keowee. These lakes are the headwaters of the Savannah River Basin and provide the drinking water supply for a major portion of the State of South Carolina. Also located on Lake Keowee, 8 miles north of our fire station is Duke Power's Oconee Nuclear Station, to which we provide first alarm response.
We supply mutual aid to four nearby fire departments. The Clemson University Fire Department provides fire and EMS services to approximately 19,876 students on campus and approximately 12,154 residents in the City of Clemson. The City of Clemson and Clemson University are four miles from the fire station. The Seneca Fire Department services both rural and city areas with a population of approximately 14,894. The Keowee Rural Fire Department services a population of approximately 4,533 who are mostly retirees. The fourth fire department is Friendship Rural Fire Department which serves a population of approximately 2,508. We also render mutual aid to the remaining 13 fire stations in Oconee County when requested. Just last year we signed a mutual aid agreement with Anderson County Fire Department that has 27 fire stations with an approximate population of 165,000.
